William Kurth Schoening, 90, of Peru, IL, formerly of Homewood, IL and Port Charlotte, FL, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Hawthorne Inn in Peru. William was born June 9, 1921 in LaSalle to William F.G. and Louise (Joop) Schoening.
William attended LaSalle-Peru High School, graduating in 1939. William attended Brown’s Business School in LaSalle for one year, and then was employed at Westclox in Peru until drafted into military service in October 1942. He served with the U.S. Army, 7th Division, 17th Infantry Regiment, in the Aleutian Islands, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Korea. He was discharged in December 1945 with the rank of Sergeant. William attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and was employed for the next 30 years in graphic arts in Chicago. He met his future wife, Viola Mohl while both were employed at the U.S. Office of Price Stabilization. They were married in Morgan Park, IL on September 1, 1956, and resided in Homewood, IL until retiring at the end of 1982 and moving to Port Charlotte, FL. After 26 years, 25 in Port Charlotte and one in Hendersonville, NC, Viola died on March 4, 2008, in the Hospice House in Port Charlotte. William moved to Peru, where he lived in his own apartment, after which he moved to Hawthorne Inn. William was an avid sports fan with a particular passion for the Chicago Cubs. In his later years, he became an enthusiastic chess player. He was a very kind, peaceful person, relating to all ages.
William is survived by a sister, Doris (Paul) Krebill of Bozeman, MT; a brother, Kurt (Frances) Schoening of Rockford, IL and several nieces and nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; his older brother, Karl Schoening, and two nephews, Mark and Ross.
