William J. Martin, Sr., died Wednesday, January 27th, at the Samaritan Hospice Inpatient Unit at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mt. Holly, he was 87 years of age. Bill was born in the family home on Bordentown Road in Burlington on August 10, 1922, and has remained a lifetime Burlington resident.
A graduate of Burlington City High School, Class of 1940, he had been employed for 35 years as a block operator for the Pennsylvania, Penn Central, Conrail, and Amtrak Railroads before retiring in 1984 from his final assignment at Grundy Tower in Bristol, PA. A United States Army veteran, he served his country honorably during World War II.
In his spare time, Bill enjoyed walking, riding his bike, and playing golf. Son of the late John, Sr., and Helen (Haines) Martin, he was also predeceased by his wife of 59 years Elizabeth (Toth) Martin, and his siblings: John Martin Jr., Joseph Martin, and Helen Tornell.
He is survived by his children and their spouses: William, Jr., (Donna) Martin of Wildwood Crest, Gary Martin, and Thomas Martin both of Burlington, and David (Kitty) Martin of Delanco as well as his former daughter-in-law; Jennifer Martin. Bill is also survived by his three granddaughters: Krystin Martin of Burlington and Rachel & Samantha Martin both of Delanco.
