William Joseph LaVoie, 73, a longtime resident of Mangowood in Palmetto Bay, died June 27, 2021 following a lengthy illness. Bill passed away peacefully at home with his wife, Luana, at his side.
Bill was born in 1947 in Waterbury, CT. to Albert and Alta LaVoie and the family moved to Miami in 1951. After graduating from Southwest High School in 1965, Bill attended Miami Dade College then went on to serve his country both in the Army and the Coast Guard Reserves. In 1968 Bill began his 42 year career with FPL, rising through the ranks to become a highly trained and skilled transformer specialist, where he tested and performed diagnostics on the transformers used in the power plants and substations throughout the FPL system, including the nuclear facilities at Turkey Point and St. Lucie.
It was not surprising that he and Luana loved to travel, since they met on a blind date traveling in Scotland.
In addition to traveling, they both had a passion for gaming. So, it was no surprise to see them in Monaco, Las Vegas, Atlantic City and even lesser known destinations like Biloxi and Tunica. But Bill’s all-time favorite for the last 20 years was Atlantis on Paradise Island.
Like so many of his closest friends in the Gator V8’er club, Bill also had a passion for antique vehicles and other collectibles. In his garage you could find anything from a classic 1941 Ford Pickup to a 1983 DeLorean, and multiple 1960 era motor scooters. Bill’s passions were also on display in his living room. Antique oil cans were next to the slot machine and gaming table along with lots of memorabilia branding his favorite drink, Coca-Cola.
Bill is survived by his wife, Luana; twin brother, Albert LaVoie (Julie); sisters, Judi Kuechle (Kevin) and Patricia Antrican (Rick); brother, Richard LaVoie (Kathy); and sister-in-law, Jan McGhan. He was “Uncle Bill” to Brian, Christopher, Danielle, Dawn, Lara and Stacy and great uncle to Aaron, Colby, Dylan, Kenzie, Lexi and Nicole.
Thanks from the entire LaVoie family to Joanie and Maria who helped care for Bill with a gentle, compassionate touch that enhanced his last months.
