William Henry von Mahland, 74, of Middletown, beloved husband of Nada Jane (Smith) von Mahland for 51 years, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at his home. Born in New York, NY and raised in Brightwaters, LI, NY, he was the son of the late Henry William and Mary Alice (Connor) Mahland. Bill lived in Middletown since 1972. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a Master’s Degree in Architecture. He served on the Middletown Inland Wetland Commission and was instrumental in developing affordable housing in Middletown. In his spare time, Bill enjoyed being around friends and family, boating, fishing, building wooden model boats and working on and restoring his historical home and barn where he loved watching the horses. Bill was a veteran serving in the United States Army during Vietnam earning the rank of Captain and later served in the Army National Guard in Connecticut. Along with his wife, Bill is survived by his son, William H. von Mahland, Jr. and his wife, Zugeily of Priceville, AL; his daughter, Hila J. Farnsworth and her husband, Jason of Middletown; his sister, Sandra Jones and her husband, Charles of Brightwaters, LI, NY; five grandchildren, Ines, William and Jacob von Mahland and Nayda and Rose Farnsworth and two nieces, Heather Jones and Courtney Cleveland of Long Island, NY.
