Captain William Harold Thompson, 87, of Newnan passed away Saturday, December 14, 2013. He was born September 18, 1926, in Charleston, SC to the late Ernest Roscoe Thompson & Rosalie Julia Pettis Thompson.
Harold’s father was a career U.S. Navy officer so he grew up living in many different locations in his youth, including Rio de Janiero, Brazil, Columbia, SC, Key West, FL & Miami, FL. Upon graduation from Edison High School in Miami, he enlisted and served in the United States Army Air Corps from March 1945 to November 1946. After his military service, he continued to work in aviation and began his career as a flight engineer with Eastern Airlines in 1955. He retired as a Captain with Eastern in 1980 after a long and distinguished career. He was a member of the Retired Eastern Pilots Association and a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. After retirement from Eastern, he and his wife Rosemary became involved with American International Aid & Lutheran Social Services, using his flight benefits to help bring orphans from countries such as South Korea, India, and Haiti to the United States on behalf of adoptive parents who were not able to make the trips overseas. Harold was also an avid golfer, woodworker, and a fan of the Legends of Don Quixote.
Survivors include wife of 65 years, Rosemary Wood Thompson; children, Jeff (Angie) Thompson, Jim (Mary) Thompson, Barbara “Babs” Powley, Amy (Daryl) Jones; grandchildren, Will (Kaylee), Tyler (Janie), Daniel (Brittany), Samuel, Derek (Alena), Andrew, Max; great-grandchildren, Andy, Daisy; brother, Roscoe Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews.
