William H. Marske, 84, of Freeport, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, October 27, 2007, at Parkview Home. Born March 2, 1923 in Eldora, Iowa he was the son of August and Clara (Tietz) Marske. He married Elsie Neuberger June 16, 1944 at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi.

Bill was a graduate of Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa majoring in commerce and finance. An avid sportsman he played college basketball serving as team captain his junior year. Following World War II he played baseball and basketball with Freeport Amvet teams.

Bill also loved to fish.He enlisted in the U.S. Infantry, and graduated from officers’ candidate school in Ft. Benning, Georgia. During World War II he served eighteen months with the Ninth Infantry Division in Germany, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant, and was engaged in three campaigns, Huertgen Forest, Remagen Bridge, and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Bill was employed by Furst McNess Company for over 27 years. He was a broker/owner of Marske Realtors for 20 years before retiring.

Surviving is his wife, Elsie of Freeport; sons, David (Gloria) Marske of Appleton, Wisconsin, Douglas (Mary) Marske of Spencer, Iowa, and Daniel (Kathleen) Marske of Rockford; his daughter, Debra (Steven) Fry of Spokane, Washington; one sister, Adeline Dettbarn of Eldora, Iowa; nine grandchildren, William, James, Adam, and Katie (Ken Puliafico) Marske, Laura (Aaron) Dietrich, Amy Marske, Ginger Klaung, Jennifer Winberg, Lindsey and Daniel Fry, and Rebecca (Tim) Crawford; one great-grandchild, Jordan Davis. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harold Marske and Marvin Marske.
