William H. Harris, Jr., passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Erwin) Harris, his parents, William Harris, Sr. and Mary (Gay) Harris and his older sisters, Barbara Adams and Mary Lambert. He leaves a nephew, Gerry Erwin and good friend, Mary Smart. Bill was born in Claremont, NH. During his youth, he also resided in MA and CT. He graduated from Hartford High School in 1940. He subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Italy during World War II. From an early age, he was fascinated with photography. His interest, knowledge and skills with a camera were well utilized by the military. He attended photography school and spent the latter years of the war making training films. After the war, Bill returned to CT, worked in area camera shops and attended Hillyer College. In 1951, he was hired as a photographer for the Metropolitan District Commission. He remained employed in that capacity for 34 years, retiring in 1984. Bill married his longtime sweetheart Dorothy Erwin in 1946. They were together for 59 happy years until her death in 2005. Bill had a lifelong love of dogs and raised German Shepherds. He had a great affinity for his two favorites: Brandy and Dolph. Bill was widely respected as a technically proficient and creative photographer. He was intelligent, kind and congenial. He will be remembered as a loving husband and a consummate gentleman who possessed a keen wit and wry since of humor.
