William George “Bill” O’Malley, age 85, of Norwalk, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, April 14, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Diane Seaman O’Malley. Bill was born in Norwalk on July 17, 1926, son of the late John and Gertrude Natteford O’Malley. He was a graduate of Norwalk High School, Class of 1944. Bill was one of Norwalk’s top basketball players in the 1940’s. He started a career of more than a decade of basketball at Norwalk High in 1944 before enlisting in the U.S. Army the day after he graduated, honorably serving his country during WW II. At Fort Sam Houston in Texas he performed in the Southwestern Army League for two years, where he excelled. For three years, 1948 through 1950, he played with the YMCA team in the City recreational league. From 1951 on, he played semi-pro basketball with the O’Brien Emeralds in different leagues and tournaments throughout Fairfield and Westchester Counties. In 1947-48 Bill received the Pastime A.C. award as the outstanding athlete in the City of Norwalk. His present sports activities consist of golf, bowling and tennis. Bill was very active locally with the South Norwalk Boat Club, the Norwalk Old Timers and St.

In addition to his wife, Bill is also survived by his three children, Kathy O’Malley Bishop, Maryellen O’Malley Daher and Thomas Jude O’Malley, his five grandchildren, Megan, Mandy and Beth Daher, and Katie and Annie Bishop, all of Norwalk; and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his two brothers John and Bernard “Nevin” O’Malley.
