William Frances Cummings Passed away the morning of January 8th, 2022, at the age of 74, at Pomerado Hospital in San Diego, California from heart failure.
William or, “Woody” as he was known by, was born in Bay Shore, New York on April 4, 1947, To Eugene and Sarah Cummings. Woody joined the Navy in 1964. He was assigned to the USS Bellatrix 64’-65’ in Vietnam. He traveled to Japan and was discharged from the Navy Hospital in Japan, 1966.
Woody married Carol Anne Cummings in 1971 and had one son, Justin Cummings. He divorced in 1981 and remarried two different times, the last marriage to Susan Cummings left Woody a widow in May of 2020.
Woody had several odd jobs from truck driving to handyman work thru the early 70’s. In 1978 he was deemed 100% disabled from the military with permanent disability status from the Veterans Affairs. He was also an active Life Member with the Veterans of Foreign Affairs, holding several positions within the organization at different posts.
Woody will always be remembered for his love of family and his generosity. He loved holidays with family enjoying large meals and delicious desserts. His favorite holiday was Easter where he donated money to the giant egg hunt his son hosted for all the kids in the family to enjoy.
Woody is survived by his only child, Justin Cummings, his two granddaughters Jessica Motyl and Julianne Cummings, his great-grandson Finn Motyl and his two older sisters Joan Cummings-Bonjorno and Alice Warr. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Eugene Cummings, and his wife Susan Cummings.
