Lewisville: William Eugene Saunders, 82, of Lewisville, passed away at his home on Saturday March 20, 2010, after a short illness. “Wart” as he was known by family and friends due to him being a “Worry Wart” was born on October 9, 1927 in Bloomington, IN, the son of the late James V. and Inez (Stewart) Sanders.
He attended Lewisville School and served his country in the U.S. Army. William worked as a mechanic all his life and worked at Dee Meadows Ford and Fred First Ford both of Richmond, Jack Shields Ford of New Castle and Allen Chevrolet of Cambridge City. After leaving Ford he went to work for the Henry County Highway Department, then finally retiring in his 70’s. His working colleagues knew him as “Shorty Saunders”. Family, friend and even strangers found their way to his garage at home to have him listen to their car, lawn mower or motorcycle and fix what other mechanics could not. He found great joy in the last years working with his sons and grandsons on restoring his mother’s 1939 Plymouth.
He is survived by sons, Tom (Sue) Saunders of Lewisville, John (Mary) Saunders of Cache, Oklahoma, daughter, Terri (Gary) Roberts of New Castle, grandsons, Jason Roberts, Andy and Patrick (Danielle) Saunders, Luke Saunders, granddaughter, Danielle Saunders, great grand son, Benjamin Roberts, sister, Patty (Charles) Morelock of Danville, several nieces and nephews and brothers and sister-in-laws.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Frances “Fanny” Saunders, a brother Robert Saunders and his mother and father.
