William Lawrence Bill Pevey, a well known Hobbs resident, died on election day, Tuesday, November 2, 2010. Bill was born July 12, 1937, to Peggy Page Pevey and W. L. Bud Pevey in Breckenridge, Texas. Bill graduated from Breckenridge High School and during his college days played for three championship football teams: Arlington State College, Texas Tech University and North Texas University. He graduated from North Texas University in 1958 with a bachelors degree in business administration.
In 1959, the Pevey family moved to Lea County and leased Elliott and Waldron Title and Abstract. Since then over the next fiftytwo years, Bill was active in Lea County, in both the community and business. Active in real estate through the years, Bill helped organize the Hobbs Board of Realtors in 1959, taught Real Estate at the College of the Southwest and in 2000 was honored as Hobbs Citizen of the Year by the Board of Realtors. He was instrumental in getting the Hobbs Soaring Society off the ground and is still a member. Through the years, Mr. Pevey owned many companies: Elliott and Waldron Title and Abstract, Plains Development Co., Horizon Escrow, Zia Plaza Shopping Center, Humble City Land Co and PV Land and Title. He developed Lincoln Park Subdivision for residential and commercial use and was influential in bringing several large businesses to hobbs.
Bill Pevey was a passionate man. A modern Don Quixote, he spent much of his time and money fighting for those who do not have the voice or the money to fight for themselves. Our community will feel his loss as Bill was generous man, always ready to help someone in need and many individuals, churches, charities and organizations were blessed by his kindness.
In 1975, Bill married the love of his life, Gail Smith Pevey. Together they raised Bills daughter, Paige Lea Pevey Holen. P.V. was preceded in death by his parents, W. L. Bud and Peggy Page Pevey and his son Joe Clay Pevey. He is survived by his wife Gail of Hobbs his daughter Paige and husband Sean Holen of Austin his grandchildren Tyler Clay and Skye Nicole Wallace of Austin and their father Major Troy Wallace of San Antonio his greatgranddaughter Kristyn Jeanne Wallace of Austin his sisters and brothersinlaw, Cindy Smith Bullok and Jim Bullok and Gary and Sylvia Smith his nephews, Kristopher and Ricky Taylor and his nieces Lyndsey and Allison Smith. Grampa Bill also called Kimi and John Thomas Boyd, and Regina, Royce and Rodney Finney, his grandchildren. He blessed us all with unique blend of humor and devotion.
