William “Bill” Jones, 76, former New Haven City Clerk and Alderman, died June 19, 2011 at Regency House, Wallingford. A resident of Bellevue Road, New Haven, he was the husband of Damonne Freeman Jones. Mr. Jones was born in Youngstown, OhioSept. 14 1934, son of the late Harry and Johnnie Mae Thompson Jones. He earned a Batchelor of Arts degree from Huston-TillotsonCollege and served in the U.S. Air Force for four years from 1954 to 1958. He received a Master of Arts degree in Urban Studies from Southern Conn. State University. He served on the Board of Aldermen from 1970 to 1976; Democratic Town Chairman from 1976 to 1978; City and Town Clerk from 1978 to 1980 and director of organizational development for the City from 1980 to later worked as Director of Title 3 Compliance for the New Haven Housing Authority. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, William Jones Jr. of Youngstown, Ohio and Lowell Jones of New Haven; three daughters, Diane & Sherrie Jones, both of Maryland and Annette Jones of Youngstown; a step son, Dennis Freeman and two step daughters, Damonica Jenkins & Brenda Freeman, all of New Haven; two brothers, Carl Jones of Ohio and Tom Jones of Maryland; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a brother, Cornelius Jones.
