SALEM – William “Bill” J. Galchick, age 94, passed away at 12:21 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 5, 1924 in Henderson, PA in Clearfield County, the son of the late Joseph and Ann (Holenchick) Galchick.

Bill graduated in 1942 from Belington, WV. He then came to Salem in 1942 to work at Mullins Manufacturing, leaving in 1943 to enter the Army Air Force, where he served as a Sergeant in the 8th Air Force 467th Bomb Group (H) and 29th Infantry Division in Europe. After World War II, he and his wife Audrey married and he returned to Mullins Manufacturing for a short while. He worked as a mason with Pyatt Masonry, Bricker and Bricker and Riley Construction before retiring in 1987. He is a life member of the VFW Post #892, Amvets Post #45 and the Bricklayers Union #10 in East Liverpool.

Bill leaves behind a legacy in the baseball community. He started coaching in the late 1950s, managing teams in Class G, F and E, American Legion, Class D, high school and adult teams. He coached many of his own children and grandchildren, as well as young men who have went on to become coaches, managers and umpires themselves. The north baseball field at Memorial Park was designated “Bill Galchick Field” by the City Parks Commission in May 1988 and he was elected to the Hot Stove Baseball Hall of Fame the same year. Bill received the very first Spirit of Salem award on June 9, 1994 for over 50 years of hard work and dedication and having a positive impact on the youth of Salem. He was also inducted into the Salem Area Bowlers Association Hall of Fame. Bill and Audrey were avid Cleveland Indians fans.

He had many passions, but above all was his family and faith. Bill enjoyed not only life, but living.

His wife, Audrey Lemae (Munsell) Galchick, whom he married November 9, 1946, preceded him in death on November 8, 2016.

Survivors include his children, Jim (Sue) Galchick of Salem, Sue Bush of Salem, Connie (Dick) Fair of Youngstown, Chris (Julie) Galchick of Columbiana, Mary (Chuck) Kille of Russellville, AL, Karen Hoff of New Waterford, Christine (Don) Whitacre of Beaver Falls, PA, Tim (Tonia) Galchick of Salem, Mark Galchick of Salem, Rosemary Julian of Salem, Laura (Jim) Stewart of Salem, Steve Galchick of Salem, Roberta Kaleel of Canfield, Ruth (Paul) Madison of Salem and Kathleen (Julian) Navarro of Girard. He is also survived by one brother, seven sisters and many grand children, great grandchildren and great great children.

A son, Tom Galchick, two brothers, Chuck and Joe Galchick; a sister, Dori Miller; his parents, Joseph and Ann Galchick; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild also preceded him in death.

The family would like to thank Community Hospice for all the love, care and support that was given to Bill and the family during this difficult time.
