William “Bee” Byrd, Sr., 80, of Middletown, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2016 in his home with his loving family by his side. Born in Darlington, South Carolina on August 25, 1935, he was the son of the late Jerome and Juanita (Brown) Byrd.
After graduating from Middletown High School in 1954 as Class Treasurer, William worked as a professional barber in Byrd’s Barber Shop, Middletown’s first African-American barber shop, owned by his father, Jerome. He then went on to work for Pratt & Whitney as a Lead Man Machinist for over 30 years until his retirement. During retirement, William spent his spare time working for the Dattco Bus Company and helping to care for his grandchildren for many years.
