William A. Jackson, Sr. (Monk, Sammy Joe, Pops), peacefully departed this life to be with the Lord  on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at the age of 75.  Pops was surrounded by family and loved ones until his passing at his home in Washington, DC, from heart & lung complications.

He was born on January 21, 1937, to Green Jackson and Minnie Lee Hill in Washington, DC. He attended DC Public Schools and immediately began working several odds jobs, and then began his long term career in the District Government’s Water & Sewer Department – as a Backhoe Technician – where he worked for 30 years and retired at the age of 55.

Monk was married to Frances E. Madison (Sally) on February 21, 1958; they were married for 54 years.  They were blessed with six wonderful children, three boys and three girls.  He was a devoted husband and father who took great pride in loving, providing, instructing & imparting wisdom to his family.

Pops loved a good game of bowling and was very competitive in the sport.  He then picked up a new hobby of playing golf – which he loved – and would spend many hours on the golf course.  He was always up for a good game of golf. He would often practice in his back yard. Pops loved cars, especially antique cars. He found enjoyment and peace in rebuilding antique cars and placing them in car competitions and have won several trophies.   He loved to drive and he did so until he became unable to. He was a Masonic Brother, member of  the Prince Hall Ionic Lodge #17, in the District of Columbia. 

Pops is survived by his wife, Frances E. Jackson; six children, William A. Jackson, Jr., W. Tammy Robinson (Broderick), Jody Jackson (Penny), Brenda L. Kidwell (Curtis), Mark Jackson and Donita Jackson; one sister, Ms. Dorothy King; two sisters-in-law, Edith Ann (John) Goodwin and Tijuana “Teewee” (Carlton) Thompson; one brother-in-law, Terrell (Geraldine “Tudy”) Madison; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; he also, was a father figure, role model and mentor to Steven Givens, Eric Smith (Smitty) and Rick Alston; and a host of nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends, who all loved him dearly.
