Wilbur L. Nelson, 87, died on Monday, December 7th at his home in Fountain Hills. Wilbur was born in Princeton, Illinois to Malcolm and Frances (Lange) Nelson. He attended Princeton schools and was an active boy scout for many years.
Wilbur was a member of the Illinois National Guard for nine years, and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion.
He married Virginia Swan on July 17, 1949. They were the parents of 5 children; Wilbur “Bill” (Lina) Nelson II of Princeton, IL, Beckie (Dave) Dunshee of Henry, IL, Beth (Rick) Peacock of Princeton, IL, Barb (Bob) Maubach of Bloomington, IL and Bonnie Nelson of Bloomington, IL. They have 8 grandchildren and 8 great- grandchildren, as well as 2 step grandchildren and 8 step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Judy Nelson, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Wilbur worked with his brother, Dick Nelson, at Advanced Asphalt building asphalt roads. He and his wife also owned a trucking business for several years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters (Marilyn Gonigam and Norma Nelick), 3 brothers (Robert Nelson, Richard Nelson and Ronald “Butch” Nelson) and a great grandson, Jonah Maubach.
Wilbur enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in sports. He liked hiking and bowling in Fountain Hills.
