Wilbur L.Groth, 94 Lakeland

Wilbur L. Groth passed away on March 15, 2015.

He was born on Nov. 20, 1920 in Brooklyn , New York where he resided until retiring to Spotswood, New Jersey and then to Lakeland, Fla. in 1988 for a better quality of life and for his wife’s arthritic condition.

As a young man and not sure what he wanted to do in life he traveled the country working for food and lodging. He was working as a ranch hand in San Diego, Calif. when the war broke out. He immediately attempted to join the Marine Corp but was medically rejected with a punctured ear drum. He decided to head home and began hitch hiking back to Brooklyn. He arrived home in time to spend Christmas with his family. He then enlisted and was accepted in the at age 21. At the age of 23 he was promoted to Master Sergeant while serving in North Africa and Southern France.

He was a parishioner at St. Anthony’s R.C.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years Virginia Frances Groth ;children, Lillian Groth, Robert Groth; 4 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandsons; along with many nieces and nephews.
