Wesley Allen Swaney, 67 of San Diego, California, passed away Monday, November 7, 2022, as his loving wife, Marie Swaney, stood by his bedside.
Wes, as he was known to family and friends, was born on May 13, 1955, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to William Swaney and Nancy Reeb Swaney. Wes graduated from Uniontown High School, Uniontown, Pennsylvania in 1973. He went on to attend Penn State University, where he graduated in 1978, with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Wes was employed as a Mechanical Engineer over a ten-year period in the field of ceramic package design and manufacturing.
Wes once co-owned a landscape materials company in Valley Center, California. He experimented with his own designs for automating home and gardening tasks. As well as projects related to fishing lures and other gear. After leaving the engineering profession, Wes began working in retail, complementing his love of the outdoors. Wes was happiest when he was fishing and very accomplished at fly tying; that is until he met the woman, he would share the rest of his life with.
On July 4, 1995, Wes and Marie King went on their first date. By February 1996, they were inseparable. Soon, she was sharing in his love of the outdoors and fishing. Each year, they had a tradition of going lobster fishing; until physical limitations made the activity difficult to enjoy. When they were not fishing, Wes and Marie made a point of traveling across the United States, taking cruises to countries in Europe and the Caribbean. They also attended blues and jazz concerts at venues in San Diego and across the United States. Wes’ love and knowledge of blues music, from its origins to its artists, was extraordinary. Wes was also known to engage in spirited philosophical and political debate. On any given day, Wes and Marie’s house was known as a place for an exchange of ideas and in-depth lively discussions.
After nineteen beautiful years together, Wes and Marie married on September 15, 2014, in a ceremony witnessed by Marie’s sister, Yvonne Brown and brother in-law, Rudoil Brown; as well as Marie’s daughter and her significant other, Markoh King and Eugene Reid, II.
Wes was preceded in death by his parents; father, William Swaney in 1980 and mother, Nancy Swaney in 2018. Wes is survived by his devoted wife, E. Marie Swaney; stepdaughters, Markoh King of La Mesa, California and Lisa King of Washington, DC; brothers, Bruce Swaney of Yulee, Florida and Wade Swaney of Plant City, Florida; daughter, Shauna Manning of Prescott Valley, Arizona; grandsons, Robert “Robbie” and Anthony Manning of Prescott Valley, Arizona; granddaughter, Emily Manning of Prescott Valley, Arizona; and a host of other nieces and nephews.
