Wendy Georgina Sterbutzel was a beautiful young woman. What became more apparent as time went on, and she lived to the fullness of life, was that she had a beautiful soul, and so she became even more lovely with the passage of time.
Born in England on Sept 6, 1937 to Albert Edward “Ted” and Evelyn “Eva” Castle, a story is told of her encounter in the late 50’s with a young American airman. This young man, Ray Sterbutzel, was immediately smitten and began his quest. The young woman, Wendy, was wise enough to be wary of young men, and wanted nothing to do with him. She got on a bus. He followed in his Morris Minor. Getting off the bus, she went into a well-kept row house. He knocked on the door and began winning her heart by honorably, and with excellent good nature, introducing himself to her parents. Her brothers, Warwick and Michael, were perhaps more skeptical of the charming young American than even Wendy was, and being good brothers, were very protective of her. But with time, patience, and the good humor that stands alongside a good nature, Ray won over the family one at a time. First Eva, then Michael, and with time his prized Wendy came to trust him.
And so it was that, after many more proper interchanges, Wendy and Ray were married on May 31st, 1958. Having begun this new life together, their friendship and love grew as they traveled the world during Ray’s military career, after which they settled in Boise, Idaho. As happens with the best of marriages, they built a family together, with three daughters and a son.
Wendy passed on to be with God, of natural causes, in her home on Monday, January 11, 2016. The legacy of her loving family lives on, now expanded to include grandchildren who had the ultimate bond with their Nanny, and she will be missed and treasured by all of us.
