Wendell L. “Sonny” Koons, 87, of Stanford, passed away on Tuesday January 17, 2017 at University Hospital in Indianapolis. Sonny was born July 27, 1929 in Bloomington and was the son of the late Oliver Wendell and Frances Ione (Knapp) Koons.
Sonny served as a member of the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a Stonecutter all of his life working at Stone Mills in Monroe and Lawrence Counties. Several pieces of Sonny’s work are on display throughout Washington D.C. and other prominent places in the United States. He was a member of the Stonecutters Union, Stanford Baptist Church and enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Bernadene (Sparks) Koons of Stanford, 3 daughters; Suzanne DeMoss of Bloomington, Shawna Koons of Greenwood and Kara Stillions (Sam) of Bloomington. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren; Mariah Sturgeon (Kyle), Jacob Bowman (Angie), Samantha Stillions, Savannah Stillions, and Jackson Davis, 3 great grandchildren, Owen and Ella Sturgeon and Brylon Bowman, 2 brothers Richard Koons (Paula) and Terry Koons (Karen), and several brothers and sisters in law and nieces and nephews.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law John DeMoss and brother James Koons, and sisters, Vanita Rose Koons and Evelyn Koons.
