Wells Nelson Raymond Jr., 70, Anderson, made every decision the same way-from diagnosing and repairing automotive systems to fighting cancer.
He gathered information about the situation; evaluated the possible solutions; made decisions based on evidence; and applied all skill and knowledge available to fix the problem. Direct. Practical. No nonsense-right up to his death on July 4, 2006 at his residence in Anderson. In good times and bad, he was surrounded and supported by family, friends and a legion of loyal foreign car customers, who, for forty years, valued his candor, competence, tenacity and integrity while recognizing his enthusiastic passion for automobiles—from designing to rebuilding to restoring his beloved 1931 Ford Coupe from the ground up.
Wells was born in Lakewood, Ohio on October 25, 1935, to Ruth Crockett Raymond and Wells Nelson Raymond Sr., who preceded him in death. He resided in Muncie, Indiana but lived in Anderson for many years.
He is survived by his loving partner, Phyllis Neubauer of Muncie; daughters, Amy & husband Craig Parker and grandchildren, Nate, Theo and Olivia of Pittsboro and Kelly & husband Steve Johnson and grandchildren Madison, Audrey Gail and Sawyer of Lizton; sister, Gail & husband Raymon Anderson of Marion, Ohio; former wife, Carolyn Presecan Raymond of Lafayette; best friend, Keith Minnick of Elwood; nieces, nephew, and cousins in Ohio and California.
A 1954 graduate of Brecksville, Ohio High School, Wells served in the Merchant Marines before his 1955-1959 US Army service in Japan, Korea, as a helicopter mechanic.
He was an ACE Master Mechanic with VW, Audi. Wells served customers at Speedway VW in Indianapolis, Jeff Hanna Motors in Richmond and Eberbach Motors/Tom Wood Honda in Anderson. From 1965 through his retirement in 2000, he was a VW and Honda technician.
