Wayne Leroy Alspaugh, 90, of Middletown, passed away on March 25, 2017, at St. Vincent’s Anderson Regional Hospital Anderson. He was born on March 8, 1927, in Near Kennard, Indiana. Wayne graduated from Cadiz High School, Class of 1945.
He enlisted and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He married and leaves to cherish his memory Jo Ann (Hamilton) Alspaugh on August 6, 1953, in Orange, CA. Wayne was a devoted father to Gary Wayne Alspaugh; caring for him and the effects of his Muscular Dystrophy until his death in 1996. He retired from the Delco Remy Division of General Motors in 1986 after 25 years of service. He was a member of Middletown Masonic Lodge #271 F. & A.M., Scottish Rite of Indianapolis, Murat Temple, Order of the Eastern Star #110, Madison County Shrine, and American Legion of Middletown. Wayne was a racing fan and early driver in the sport. He later owned several race cars with his son. He started in the pole position of the Anderson Little 500 in 1955 and 1956. He started in the second position in 1958 and claimed victory. It was a two-day race due to rain with 9000 fans present. Wayne’s racing legacy and contributions to the early history of racing were recently recognized on the Hot Rod Network in an article titled “Little 500 – Indy’s Other Race” written by Todd Ridgeway on July 12, 2012. He was inducted into the Little 500 Hall of Fame on May 26, 1993.
Wayne is survived by his loving spouse, Jo Ann (Hamilton) Alspaugh of Middletown; sister, Charlene (Vernon) Manwaring of Anderson; Several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by Parents, Nellie Mae Alspaugh and Robert Otto Alspaugh; son, Gary Wayne Alspaugh; sister, Phyllis Ann Maddy; brother, Charles Edward Alspaugh.
