Wayne Harold Summerill– husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend–passed away at 76 from causes incident to age, Sunday, May 15, 2022.
A lifelong resident of Ogden, Dad was born the second of three siblings, May 5th 1946 to Lear Alfred Summerill and Dorothy Read Vandyke Summerill in Ogden, Utah.
During summers in between college courses at Weber State College, Dad interned with Read Brothers canvas, where he learned to sew. He continued and greatly expanded his sewing capabilities becoming a master craft upholsterer, running a side business from his home for several years.
Dad enjoyed giving back to his community through his volunteer work, serving as a missionary in the LDS church with his wife. He also employed his application development programming skills and wrote and maintained the volunteer database that was used by McKay Dee hospital. Though he never played soccer, he greatly enjoyed coaching kids’ soccer teams, ensuring all were given opportunities to play.
Apart from family and volunteer work, one of Dad’s most ambitious projects involved tearing off the roof his home and building a second story. With the help of his father Lear, his sons, and other friends, Dad turned a small cottage into a beautiful home. He enjoyed creating, constructing, and repairing just about anything, and rarely found any task too difficult for him to accomplish.
Dad married his childhood schoolmate and sweetheart Sandra d’Hulst on August 24th, 1967. They raised three awesome sons and then enjoyed retirement in the home where they raised their family on the beautiful East Bench in Ogden.
Dad was a remarkable man. His first and foremost priority was his family. He laughed and cracked jokes whenever the occasion presented itself. He loved to smile and shared his time and wisdom enthusiastically. Dad never missed an opportunity to support, help, or cheer up someone. He was very aware of others’ needs and did whatever he could to lighten their loads. Dad will always be remembered by all who knew him, especially his children and grandchildren. Dad loved vacationing with and taking his family on road trips. He also loved dogs and taught his son’s the joy and friendship they brought.
Dad is survived by his wife Sandra Summerill, their three sons and their spouses: Peter Summerill; Read and Karie Summerill, and Ryan and Laura Summerill; with five grandchildren and 3 grandpets. He is also survived by his brother Van Summerill and his sister Sally Summerill and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lear and Dorothy Summerill, and brother-in-law Doug Cannon.
