Norwich – Dr. Wayne G. Horn, U.S. Navy CMDR (Ret.), beloved husband, father and physician died June 5 after an extended illness.
Wayne was born May 8, 1947, to Edgar and Lois Horn at Fort Clayton in the Panama Canal Zone, and settled with his family in Bossier City, LA. He was inducted into the Bossier High School Hall of Fame and received the key to the city in 2012. During junior high, he met Frieda Cogburn, who would go on to become his wife of 44 years.
Wayne earned degrees in microbiology and chemistry from Northwestern State University. After graduation, he was called to duty with the U.S. Navy, and counted his days on the USS Oriskany as some of his most memorable of the Vietnam War. Wayne was rarely seen without a book in his hand, and his academic passions drew him to LSU Medical School. He graduated in 1979 and practiced family medicine in Modesto, CA. He was a Naval reservist and in 1991, Operation Desert Storm led Wayne back to active-duty military. He joined the Navy’s submarine medical force, moving to Fernandina Beach, FL, and San Diego, CA, later serving as the medical director of Naval Submarine Medical Research Center in Groton, CT.
Wayne was known to all for his kindness and generosity. He is survived by his wife Frieda, and his proudest accomplishments, their three children Melanie, Allison and David.
