Wayne A. “Was” Sigsbee, 67, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully amongst his family at Elkhart General Hospital on Friday, May 15, following an illness.

He was born Feb. 15, 1948, in Elkhart, to the late John Sigsbee and Mary (Hug) Sigsbee, who survives in Elkhart.

Also surviving are his daughter, Stephanie (Craig) Miller of Elkhart; sons Timothy (Amanda) Sigsbee of Elkhart and Michael (Jennifer) Sigsbee of Bristol; his brother David (Nancy) Sigsbee of Goshen; grandchildren Olivia and Bryce Sigsbee and Rylee Miller; and former spouse Dixie Sigsbee of South Bend.

He is preceded in death by his cousin and best friend, Michael Sigsbee, U.S. Marine Corps, who was killed in combat in Vietnam.

Wayne was a 28-year veteran of the Elkhart Fire Department. He served as a firefighter/​paramedic, fire inspector, water rescue diver and chief mechanic, and had attained the rank of captain. He was also a longtime employee of Tom and Erv’s Bait and Tackle Shop in Elkhart, Bristol Sporting Goods and Jones Electric. Wayne was an avid fisherman and a “jack of all trades” who enjoyed tinkering in his workshop and building anything from canoes to cabinets to fishing rods. Whether it was rescuing ducks, giving CPR to cats or keeping the good citizens of Elkhart safe and sound, Was will be best remembered for his dedication to the fire service, his love for fishing and for being a gourmet firehouse cook.
