Waunita was born on May 7, 1918, in Norfolk, the daughter of Everett and Dorothy (Mueller) Ferris. She was raised in Norfolk and attended the Norfolk Public Schools.

In 1936, Waunita married John P. Mathews in Norfolk. Two children came from this union, John Jay and Pamela. They divorced in 1952 after a two year separation.

Waunita worked in women’s fashion. She was employed at the Hestead’s Dime Store, Hutchinson’s Department Store, Ashley’s Clothing Store, Sears, the Fair Store, Stinson’s, and the Style Shop.

Waunita married Robert Tibbs on October 28, 1977, in Yankton.

She enjoyed baking especially with the rhubarb from her yard. She took great pride in her yard. Waunita also loved to dance to the big bands. However, her passion was for her family.

Waunita was a 66 year member of the VFW Post 1644 Auxiliary.

Waunita is survived by her children: John Jay (Barbara) Mathews, Pamela Muller (Larry Hipp), three grandchildren, Kimberly Svoboda, Cami (Terry) Kuehler and Tana Godel; six great grandchildren, a niece: Frances Teague all of Norfolk, a sister-in-law Effie (Norris) Hansen of Wayne.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, two sisters-in-law and one grandson, Mark Mathews.
