Retired Lt. Commander Warren O. Nelson, 81, of La Mesa, CA and formerly of Galien, Michigan, was found dead of natural causes, in his home on April 27, 2005. Warren was born July 21, 1923 to Milford and Ruth Nelson, at their home in Galien, and graduated from Galien High School in 1941.

Warren served his country in WW II and in the Korean War as a Navy Aviator, flying from aircraft carriers Independence and Boxer. He was awarded two distinguished flying crosses for his actions in Korea. He retired from the USNAC on July 1, 1967, then ran his own bookkeeping and tax service, retiring in 1990. Warren married his high school sweetheart, Lorna Potter, on December 1, 1945 at the Galien United Methodist Church. They started a family and cared for their three children who were all born with Cerebral Palsy.

Warren was active in the formation and operation of the Association for the Retarded Citizens in San Diego. He is survived by his children, Christine and Scott, both of Noah Homes in Spring Valley, California; and Roberta of Friendship Homes in National City, California; his brother, Robert and his wife Vera of Southern Oregon, several nephews, nieces and their families. Warren also leaves to cherish his memory, many of his wife’s family members and friends in and around the Galien area. He was preceded in death by his father in 1935, his mother in 1967, and Lorna, his wife of 56 years, in 2002.
