Walter William West, age 83, passed away on October 4, 2017 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family and with the support of caring and compassionate Hospice staff, it was a dignified and pain free passing.
After a marriage of 61 years, he leaves behind his loving wife, Eleanor. He is also survived by his daughters Margaret Oakes and her husband Clifford of Milford, CT, Robby West and her husband Joseph Napolitano of Stoughton, Cathy Ford and her husband Glenn of Stoughton, and Debby Roberts and her husband Chuck of Brandon, VT. In addition, he leaves behind 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, as well as his siblings Richard West of Concord, NH, Roberta Healy and her husband Charles of Tarpon Springs, FL, and Kenneth West and his wife Judith of St. Augustine, FL.
Walter was born on March 4, 1934 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Richard A. and Theresa C. West. As a young man he was a star athlete playing Varsity on both baseball and football teams in high school. He met his beloved wife Eleanor in college and married her on August 21, 1956. He served in the Army for 6 years. Walter worked in management at F. W. Woolworth Company for over 25 years. Walter and his family settled in Stoughton in 1969. After his retirement he drove a school bus for Stoughton Public Schools for many years enjoying his interactions with the children he transported. He and his wife were also long-time volunteers for the Stoughton Senior Center where Walter called the weekly Bingo games and they both delivered Meals on Wheels. He was an avid Red Sox fan and collected Hummels and coins. He also enjoyed reading and playing cribbage.
He was a devoted husband and loving father. He was a big hearted and generous man with a wonderful sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him.
