Walter R. Kovach, age 80, of Columbiana, passed away at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at the Hospice House in Poland with his loving family by his side. He was born February 3, 1936 in Monaca, Pennsylvania the son of the late John and Emilia (Yanik) Kovach.
A graduate of Monaca High School, Walt moved his family to Salem, when he began his career at General Motors in 1966. After retiring in 1991, he enjoyed many winters in Homosassa, Florida. He was a member of the Holy Trinity English Lutheran Church in Salem. He loved the game of golf, and was one of the original members at the Salem Hill Golf and Country Club. Walt especially enjoyed his Wednesday night golf “with the guys” and held a special place in his heart for his Thursday retiree’s league. He also spent many years and made many friends as the long time treasurer and house committee member at the Salem Slovak club. He was proud to have an instrumental role in the planning of their new building which stands today. Walt was an avid fan of Pittsburgh sports, with the Pittsburgh Pirates being his favorite team.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Janice, whom he married on October 20, 1956; daughters, Cindy (Bob) Kreidler of Matthews, North Carolina, Barb Kovach of Charlotte, North Carolina and Sherry (Dave) Fisher of Salem; grandchildren, Abbey Kreidler and Robby Kreidler whom he adored; sisters, Fran Borrelli, Jo Kovach and Dolly Kovach; brother Robert Kovach; as well as his sisters and brothers-in-law; along with many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John, Edward and Michael and sisters, Agnes, Mildred and Eleanor.
The family wishes to send special thanks to the staff at the Hospice of the Valley for the loving care given to Walt and the entire family, and to the many friends and relatives who visited, called and sent caring cards to Walt during his short illness.
