Mr. Griffin was born in Decatur, Alabama on February 15, 1932 to the late Sammie Lee and Hester Jane Ayers Griffin. He departed this life on September 8, 2013 in Decatur, Alabama at River City Care and Rehabilitation.
Walter attended Decatur Negro High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force on August 17, 1951. He served during the Korean Conflict. After he was honorable discharged from the service, he returned to Decatur in 1955. He was employed by the Alabama Regional TB Sanatorium located in Decatur, City of Decatur Sanitation Department and retired from the Decatur General Hospital as an assistant surgical nurse.
He confessed a hope In Christ at an early age and joined Union Grove Primitive Baptist Church. He later united with King’s Memorial United Methodist Church and served faithfully in the Faith Sharing Sunday School Class, the Missions Committee, and The United Methodist Men. He had a spiritual gift for singing and could remember by heart, many spirituals and hymns. He also was a member of the Vitality Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings and his longtime companion, Mrs. Ida Mae Lockhart Pickett.
He leaves to cherish his memory: siblings, Morris (Lisa) Griffin and Sarah Griffin both of Decatur, Tony Holley of Triana and Vina Foster of Nashville, TN and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
