Date Line – Sanford

Walter Martin had his ticket to ride away to Heaven and got on board during the early morning of August 12, 2005, as the world rested quietly. Walter Lee “Pip” Martin was born June 17, 1927 in Lee County, North Carolina, to the late Herbert and Nancy Martin.

He confessed Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Sinai Holiness Church under Bishop James G. Lowdermilk.

In 1948 he was joined in Holy Matrimony to Cleo Beatrice Black by the late Rev. Quick. To this union nine children were born.

During his lifetime, Walter Lee was a skilled carpenter, mechanic and landscape artist. He built a log cabin on the Reeves Ridge Farm. He built three Mt. Sinai Holiness Churches; the on South Plank Rd (his home church), the one on Washington Ave in Sanford, and the one in Siler City. He also helped build a beach house at Cape Lookout for Mr. Charles M. Reeves. In his youth he trained to be a boxer.

He was well known throughout this community for his good nature and million dollar smiles and laughs. He loved and enjoyed hearing a good joke and told quite a few himself.

He loved to hunt and he thought he could fish (says Bert)

Still at the station are his wife of 55 years, Cleo Beatrice Black Martin, and his nine children: Cynthia Martin Williams (Jacob), Walter Anthony Martin (Pamela), Judith Sharon Todd (James), Brenda Kaye Martin, Penelope Suzette Lewis (Jaime), Trevor Montrell Martin (Lena), Tracy Darrell Martin (Angela), Xavier Mercer Martin (Wendy), Lisa Jillana Sanders (Larry Dean), Earl Black (Special Son).
