Walter James Fleming, 98, of Tallahassee, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2016, after a short illness.

Son of Joseph and Mary Dorr Fleming, he was born August 6, 1917, in Hoosick Falls, New York. After serving and surviving Normandy on D-Day, Holland during Market Garden, and Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, he was honorably discharged as a Captain, in the United States Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. An avid gardener, he also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, working crosswords, and fishing. His greatest love, however, was his family. Preceded in death by Shirley Weeden Fleming, his wife of 62 years; children, Pamela Fleming and Jeffrey Fleming; and seven siblings, he is survived by his children, Linda (John) Haubner, Joann (Jerry) Aboe, Jerome Fleming, Jill (Steven) Hart and Lucinda (Tom) Thomas; grandchildren, James Kalica, Jean Sheerin, Daniel Wentworth, David Wentworth, Mark Haubner, Jeffrey Haubner, Erin Gallagher, and Patrick Gallagher; great-grandchildren, Casey Kalica, Christopher Kalica, Erika Bates, Jackie Sheerin, Kimberly Wentworth, Abigail Wentworth, Theo Haubner, and Nina Haubner. Also, surviving are his brother Joseph, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family in New York, and his cherished friends at Cherry Laurel.
