Walter Joseph Podolak of Plainville passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, September 29, at the age of 88.  Walter was born in New Britain to Stephen and Anna Podolak.

He was one of ten children, and shortly after Pearl Harbor, Walter and his twin brother, Peter, enlisted in the Navy together.  Walter’s twin was killed in the battle of Normandy, but Walter went on to survive Iwo Jima, and lived a happy and full life with his loving family.  Walter retired from Pratt & Whitney in 1985.  He loved to bowl, and continued to bowl on leagues long into his retirement.  He was a member of The Mall Walkers, and logged more than two thousand miles.  He was an avid sports fan; loving football, basketball, and especially his Red Sox baseball team.

Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Eunice (Roper) Podolak; his son Peter Podolak and his wife Denise Duperry of Largo Florida; his daughter Marcy Spieler and her husband Richard of Naugatuck; his granddaughter Sarah Sirignano and her husband Jason of Bristol; his grandson Jarrod Podolak and his wife Lauren of Bristol; his great-grandchildren Joslin and Hanna Podolak, and Chloe Sirignano; his sister Mary Skorupski of Illinois (formerly of New Britain), and several nieces and nephews.

Walter was a kind and wonderful man, and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

His family wishes to thank the caring staff at Apple Rehab, especially Dehlia, Jackie, and Joyce, for making Walter’s last days bearable, and they also send heartfelt thanks to the Hospice staff for their special care of this gentle giant.
