Walter J. Kachnowski of Newington passed away on Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at the age of 90. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy “Dottie” (Coss) Kachnowski. Walter was born in New Britain and was the son of the late Wladyslaw and Albina (Jurewicz) Kachnowski. After graduating New Britain High School he enlisted in the U.S. Army and honorably served his country during the Korean War. He was a lifelong resident of Newington and a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Spirit. Walt was employed with the Town of Newington as a School Bus Driver for over 40 years and so enjoyed this occupation. The kids on the buses loved him and he was affectionately known around town as “Walt the Famous Bus Driver”. Walter’s love of movies compelled him to work nights and weekends as a projectionist at the Meriden Theater. He enjoyed all types of movies and was especially fond of the antics of Laurel and Hardy. His home basement was set up as a mini theater and he delighted in sharing his collection of films with family and friends. His family will miss his amazing sense of humor, always ready with a joke or two often with his sidekick, “Gus”. A loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and godfather, he is survived by his four children and spouses, Diane Kachnowski (Newington), Daniel & Holly Kachnowski (Manchester), Robert Kachnowski (New Britain) and William & Mary Lou Kachnowski, Sr. (New Britain); four cherished grandchildren, Jeremy and Sara Kachnowski, William Kachnowski, Jr. (fiancée Kady Vallee) and John Walter Kachnowski; five treasured great grandchildren, Jonathan Pyne, Mya and Tyler Smith, Aria Pantaleo and Keira Kachnowski. In addition, he leaves grandson-in-law, Josh Smith, several nieces, nephews and loving relatives. Walter was predeceased by his granddaughter Jacqueline (Kachnowski) Smith and his four brothers, Theodore, Edward, Henry and Victor.
