Walter Hills Cohoon – It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of the love of my life, Walter Hills Cohoon, age 83, who died unexpectedly on November 30, 2020 while on vacation in Aruba. Over the last few years he fought a courageous battle of declining health.
He was born in Worcester, Ma on April 6, 1937 and was the son of the late Charles A. Cohoon and Barbara (Hills) Cohoon. Walter was raised in South Hadley and graduated from South Hadley High School in the class of 1955. He continued his education at The Culinary Institute of America in New York, graduating from there as an Executive Chef, he worked for many area restaurants, including the former Yankee Peddler and Tobacco Valley Inn. Walter returned to college some years later, to Bentley College in Waltham and received his degree in Business Administration. He was an Executive Vice President for Apollo Plastics Corporation with a career spanning over thirty years, before his retirement.
Walter was a kind and loving person who never complained and always tried to see the good. He was gifted with a great sense of humor and liked to play practical jokes, once he created a sign and attached to the back of his friend’s car that read “HONK IT’S MY BIRTHDAY”! His great escapes were reading, concerts, outings at Tanglewood and working on his model trains. Anyone who knew Walter, was aware of his love for classic automobiles. He was especially proud of his 1965 Avanti and loved taking it to car shows. He also enjoyed hosting an exchange student from Spain which gave Walter great joy and over the years, Alex and Walter stayed in close contact. Traveling was another passion of Walter’s and he spent many wonderful vacations at Disney World and he looked forward to every November to return to Aruba his “Home Away from Home”.
Walter is survived by his loving and cherished wife, Maxine Nan (Krzanowski) Cohoon, they were married on July 22, 1972 at the former Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.
