Walter H. Berns, Jr. passed away Monday, May 11, 2015. He was a native of New Orleans and a resident of Slidell since 2005. Son of the late Joyce Ritter Berns and Walter H. Berns, Sr. He is also preceded in death by his devoted wife of 45 years, Betty Lewis Berns; and his sister, Wihelmina “Willie” Berns Hoffmann. Walter is survived by his loving girlfriend, Yvonne White, his beloved children, Walter “Sonny” Berns, III (Gidget) and Richard “Ricky” Berns; his cherished grandchildren, Shelbie Berns, Harleigh Berns and Dakota “Bubba” Berns; 2 brothers, James “Jimmy” Berns (Dora) and Dave “Crockett” Berns (Darlene). Walter is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, including his very close friends, Larry and Bootsie Mathews and Mike and Jeannie Clyburn.
Walter served in the United States Army as an OCS Instructor during the Vietnam War, he was a retired Crane Operator, Member of the IUOE 406 for 45 years, Member of The Knights of Columbus, Member of The Wounded Warriors, Member of the Gretna Police Mounted Posse and he served in the Lions Club.
Walter was well known as “Santa Claus” all over the North and South Shore.
