Walter Gettler, 84, of Greenfield, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Greenfield Manor in Greenfield, Iowa.

Walter Nelson Gettler was born on October 31, 1923, in Valley Falls, Kansas, the son of William and Mary (Mosman) Gettler.

He attended country school and the Catholic Parochial School in Coon Rapids, Iowa. Walter then returned home to help on the family farm.

On January 9, 1944, he was united in marriage to Elaine Wedemeyer. To this union one daughter and seven sons were born. They farmed in Guthrie and Audubon counties before moving to the Casey, Iowa, area in 1951. They continued to farm until moving to Adair in 1969. Walter continued Gettler Construction, building numerous homes in the Adair area. He then moved to Bridgewater where he had two more sons. Walter entered Greenfield Manor in July of 2006.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and telling jokes. Walter also enjoyed raising many garden items and wasn’t afraid to brag about it. He loved to travel.

Walter is survived by his daughter, Karen (James) Grant of Adair, Iowa; his sons, Duane (Mary) of Adair, Iowa, Donald (Derinda) and Delmar (Marie) all of Casey, Iowa, Dean (Sharon) of Emerson, Iowa, Daryl (Sherry) and David (Kristen) of all of Adair, Iowa, Walter C. of Anita, Iowa, and Jessie (Lisa) of Utah; 29 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill of Arizona, Richard and Larry both of Iowa, and Danny of Missouri; his sisters, Irma of Arkansas, Glenna and Mary Lou of Iowa, and Laura of Arizona; and daughter-in-law, Sheryl (Gettler) Nichols of Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Gettler; his son, Dennis in 2001; his granddaughter, Debra Grant; his great-grandson, Cade Gettler; and his brothers, Gregory in infancy, Paul in 1958, Gerald in 1985 and Vernon in 1998.
