Walter Eugene Mefford, 82, of Meredosia, died Monday, April 21, 2008, in Beardstown. He was born March 15, 1926, in Meredosia, the son of Milo Roscoe and Ethel Newman Mefford. He married Carol Barfield on Feb. 6, 1992, in Hannibal, MO. and she survives.
He is survived by one son, BillyJack Mefford of Indianapolis, IN; four grandchildren, Josh Montgomery of Springfield, Jerid and Kylie Montgomery, both of Beardstown, and Christian Eugene Mefford of Indianapolis; one stepson, Gary Wayne Anderson of Peoria; one stepdaughter, Kimberly Sue Anderson of Chapin; and one step-granddaughter, Janet Leigh Gregory of Chapin.
He was preceded in death by one son, Roger Bryce Mefford; one daughter, Ericka Jean Mefford; two brothers, William Mefford, and Junior Mefford (surviving wife, Glenna of Winchester); and one sister, Jenevieve Jude Crews.
Mr. Mefford served with the U.S. Marines during WW II, receiving two Purple Hearts. He was an independent insurance agent in Morgan County for forty years, retiring in 1985. He was of the Protestant faith and loved to read his Bible and enjoyed fishing.
