Shortsville – Walter E. VanCaeseele, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 21, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family.

After high school, Walt was drafted into the Army, attaining the rank of specialist 3rd class. He completed his basic training at Fort Dix and then was subsequently stationed at Fort Meyer in Arlington, VA. Walter continued to proudly serve our country for two years in the 3rd Infantry Regiment Honor Guard. He also served in the reserves until 1962. He was invited to take part in the honor flight mission 58 in the spring of 2018. He enjoyed this time in Washington, DC with his fellow comrades immensely.

After his 35 year career at American Can, Walt was known for never slowing down. He enjoyed working on his farm, riding around in his buggy, farming and raising his beef cattle. In addition, Walter found a love for the state of Florida and enjoyed spending most winters with his wife, JoAnn, and family at their second home in Bradenton, FL, all while trying to keep up with his 12 grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all of the caregivers, doctors, and nurses at FF Thompson, Highland, and Strong hospitals. A special thank you to the Canandaigua VA for all the service they provided. The Ontario Yates hospice was exceptional for his transition into heaven. All of the neighbors, friends, and family who were there for him will never be forgotten.

Walter will be remembered by his children Lorraine (Jeff) Cummings and Bob (Linda) VanCaeseele; grandchildren Austin (Jackie Strong) Cummings, Calla (Lawrence) Briggs, Eric (Kate) VanCaeseele, Laura (Mike) Montross and Cristi (Zach) Schaertl; great-grandchildren Mallory and Anna VanCaeseele, Isabella, Madelyn and Emma Montross, Maggie and Mila Schaertl.

Walter was predeceased by his wife, JoAnn in 2020.
