Walter Loy (Bud) Peterson, son of Harry and Mildred Pearl (McGee) Peterson was born September 11, 1940, in Iowa City, Iowa, and passed away Sunday, December 13, 2020, at his residence in Adair, Iowa, at the age of 80 years. He grew up on a farm near Charter Oak, IA, where Bud attended county school and then high school in Charter Oak. The family moved to a farm east of Woodbine in the spring of 1958. Bud worked for the rock quarry in Logan before starting to work with Booth and Olsen Construction, which he drove a cement powder truck for the paving of Interstate 29 and Highway 59. In the spring 1959, the company started paving Interstate 80. While Bud was working on the interstate, he met Lola Barber as she was waitressing at the local cafe in Anita, IA.

They were married on May 31, 1961, and farmed near Woodbine for 2 years. On December 11, 1963, they moved to the farm north of Adair which they had purchased. To this union four children were born, Cindy, Dennis, Darin, and Darryl.

Bud did a lot of custom work for neighbors: plowing, baling hay, planting crops in the spring and harvesting. He was always willing and ready to help a neighbor and friend with crops or haying. During the January – April of 1966, Bud completed 54 hours of a diesel mechanic class in Des Moines.

He and Lola loved being outside with their kids, whether it was working or having fun. “Family Hour”, as Bud referred to it, was hours spent picking up rocks, cutting thistles, and walking many acres of beans. “Family Fun” included sledding, snowmobiling, boating, and water skiing; which could not happen until the chores were done first.

Bud was a member of the Adair Farmers Lumber Yard where served on the board. He was a member of the Guthrie County REC. Bud and Lola were Grade A Dairy Farmers of America members for many years. They also raised hogs and had beef cows.

Bud loved going to casinos and playing “Black Jack” of which he was very good at coming back home with a little more money than he left with. The two of them took several trips out west to casinos with friends during the winter months. While they were there they would do sightseeing, which he loved. Whole family vacations to Black Hills, South Dakota; Dahlonega, Georgia; and Gatlinburg, Tennessee, made for some great memories. Fried potaters (also known as potato chips) and ham sandwiches made for some wonderful laughs.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Eldene (Leonard) Abbott; daughter in-law, LouAnn Peterson; his father and mother-in-law, Paul and Lois Barber; his brother-in-law, Larry (Linda) Barber; sister in-laws, Janice Peterson and Ruth Akers.

He is survived by his wife, Lola of 59 years; his daughter, Cindy (Gary) Lundy of Fontanelle, IA; his sons, Dennis (Stacey) Peterson of Adair, IA, Darin (Patty) Peterson of Adair, IA, and Darryl (Ally) Peterson of Dahlonega, GA.
