CARLYLE — Walter Anthony Mauck Sr., 92, of Carlyle, formerly a longtime resident of McLeansboro, died at 8:50 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Carlyle Healthcare Center.
He was born April 27, 1920, in Bridgeport, Ohio, son of George E. and Anna (Strauss) Mauck. He married Aurelia Marie Frey on Sept. 4, 1946, at St. Clement’s Catholic Church, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 14, 2008.
Mr. Mauck is survived by three sons, Carl Frey Mauck and wife Vicki of Argyle, Texas, Rev. George Mauck of Carlyle, and Walter A. Mauck Jr., and wife Susan of Springboro, Ohio; a sister, Sister Anne Rita Mauck of SCN of Louisville, Ky.; two grandsons, Timothy Mauck and wife Wendy, and Matthew Mauck and wife Krista; four granddaughters, Teresa Shaffer and husband Ryan, Christina and Catherine Mauck, and Amy Mauck and fiancé Jon Phillips; seven great grandchildren, Jackson Ryan, Hudson Matthew and Finley Ryan Shaffer, Elia Riley and Lilah Reese Mauck, John Arthur and Henry Richard Mauck; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Agnes Pasztor and Loretta Gulla; and brothers John, Karl and Harold Mauck.
Mr. Mauck was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Pacific Theater of World War II. He ran Mauck’s Grocery store in McLeansboro from 1948 to 1954 and he retired from McLeansboro Post Office as a carrier for Route 3.
He loved his wife, family, church and country. Mr. Mauck spent his retirement working in his woodshop. He was great working with his hands and could fix practically anything. He always said, “You’ve got to fall in love with your work.” First, though, he fell in love with his wife and family, and second, his Catholic faith. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 7118, American Legion Post 106 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8039.
