Wallace A. Nelson, 89, of Meridian, ID, passed away on November 10, 2014, in the company of family.
Wally was born August 23, 1925, in Clifton, KS, to Albert and Hazel (Olsen) Nelson. After graduating from high school, he began college at Kansas State Teachers College. With the onset of WWII, he enlisted in the army and served in the European theater of operations. On December 17, 1944, Wally was captured by German forces during the Battle of the Bulge. He spent 105 days in a German POW camp from December to April 1944. After his separation from the army, he returned home to finish his college degree.
While finishing his degree he met Roberta McHenry, who were married September 30, 1948. To this marriage were born three children, Max (Cindy) Nelson of McPherson, KS, Wendy (Mike) Nelson of Northglenn, CO, and Nancy Jo (Tim) Meyer of Boise, ID.
Surviving Wally are his wife, Bobbie; a brother, Orval (Roween) Nelson of Emporia, KS; a sister Peggy (Dennis) Knox of Stillwater, OK; his three children; six grandchildren – John Nelson of Millersburg, OH; Andrew (Elizabeth) Nelson of Ypsilanti, MI; Joshua (Reneé) Nelson of Ward, AR; Kali Nelson of Northglenn, CO; Kelly-Rae Meyer of Flagstaff, AZ; and Levi Meyer of Nampa, ID – and three great-grandchildren, Allyson and Gavin Nelson of Arapahoe, NE, and Lillian Nelson of Ward, AR.
Though Wally Nelson only had three children, he was called “Dad” by countless young people throughout his life.
