Walker Earl “Barney” Barnett Jr., 82, of Newnan, GA, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Piedmont Hospital only 2 weeks after being diagnosed with aggressive lung cancer. Barney was born July 13, 1936 in Phenix City, AL to Walker E. Barnette & Lucile Morton Clegg. He was preceded in death by his daughter Phyllis Powell in 2011 and his beloved wife Norma in 2013.

Barney enlisted in the Navy in 1953 and was honorably discharged in San Francisco in 1957 where he had met and fallen in love with his wife, Norma. After the birth of their daughter, they made their living on the Central Coast of California where he worked as a Sheet Metal worker with the Santa Barbara Local 273. He had a successful career locally and overseas which led them on many adventures including travels to Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. After returning to Santa Maria, Barney and Norma were active in real estate until their move to Newnan in 1999. Barney was a dedicated past member of the Elks Lodge 1538 in Santa Maria, CA and a proud member of the Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason Central Coast Lodge #237. Barney knew no stranger. He will be remembered by his kindness, hospitality and sense of humor.

He will be most missed by his son Ray and daughter-in-law Becky, son-in-law, Craig Powell, grandchildren: Clifford Strate, Haylie Cribbs, Mallory Barnett, niece, Allena Avery, maternal aunts, Harriete Wright, Mary Ann Howard, his Phenix City extended family, dear friend and companion, Charlotte Schulz, and his faithful dog, Ollie.
