Waitman Kapaldo, age 97, of DeMotte passed away at Hospice of the Calumet Area of Munster, IN on Sunday, August 19, 2018. He was born April 17, 1921 in Morgantown, WV to John Sr. and Alice (Smith) Kapaldo. Waitman attended Morgantown Public Schools, Class of 1938.

After graduating he proudly served in World War II, serving on the U.S.S. Laffey during the battle at Okinawa Island. Upon discharge he went to college at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, IL. Waitman married Nancy Cary on December 24, 1948 in Harvey, IL and celebrated 69 years in a loving marriage. He was employed as an electrical engineer for Allis-Chalmers in Harvey, IL for 30 years.

While retired he pursued a painting career as an accomplished wildlife artist. Waitman participated in community projects, painting murals, in Lake Placid, Florida. He also sold paintings at Jameson Galleries. Waitman loved to fish & hunt, was an avid outdoorsman, excellent swimmer, and loved nature and his family. Waitman is survived by his wife: Nancy Kapaldo of DeMotte, IN; children: Patricia Brackman of DeMotte, IN; Debra (Scott) Ware of Cedar Springs, MI; David Kapaldo of Springfield, VA; Waitman (Penny) Kapaldo Jr. of Edenton, NC; Robert (Peggy) Kapaldo of Howe, IN; 14 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; siblings: Jack (Deloris) Kapaldo, John (Lola) Kapaldo, Donald Kapaldo, Dorothy Burd.
