Vivian Arletta Keerbs was born on the family farm in Great Oak Township on September 10, 1931. She was welcomed by her parents Willard and Lillian (Troug) Keerbs and sister Velma. She was educated in a one room country school, and then the Mallard public school from 7th grade on, attended Emmetsburg Jr. College and Iowa State University. Vivian worked in the kitchen of the Home Cafe.

As an independent she built a new building on Highway 4 in Mallard and for 25 years the “Duck Inn” catered to the youth in the area. The soft serve ice cream machine, deep fat fryer and grill were the tools of her trade. Vivian was the secretary treasurer for the Mallard Devlopment Group, represented Mallard on the Northwest Regional Housing Authority for 19 years, was a member of the Mallard Garden Club, a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Mallard, the Rebekah Circle and was treasurer of the All Circle Guild. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer she participated in a pancreatic study at the Mayo Clinic. She was called Home on March 9, 2015 at the Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Vernard, and sister Velma. Sruvivors inlcude her sister in law Ann Keerbs and Vernard’s two children Mark and Andrea Keerbs.
