Vissie Courtney Wood

January 23, 1940 ~ September 13, 2012

Vissie was born in Baker, Florida on January 23, 1940 and lived her young life in Milligan, Florida. Vissie was preceded in death by her sister, Opal Soles of Milligan and her parents Gettis and Mary L. Courtney. She has a sister, Sylvia Kennedy who lives in Carriere, Miss. She has a niece, Sonja Soles Sperokia and Son, Christopher from Pensacola, Florida. Her nephew is Roger Soles another niece, Jamie Kennedy of Seattle, Washington. Her adopted daughter was Rochel of Mary Esther, Florida and son, Joshua.

Vissie met her husband Frank when he was an airman at Hurlbert field. They snuck off to Georgia to be secretly married but, had a three day waiting period, so drove to Dothan, Alabama. They needed a blood test and arrived back at courthouse with five minutes till closing. They were married and for 47 years loved each other.

Vessie and Frank were both civil servants and built a home in Fort Walton Beach, she was a wonderful cook; friend and loving companion till Alzheimer’s robbed her memory. Vessie volunteered at St. Mary’s thrift shop. She loved helping Frank and his Kiwanis Club projects for the community. We’re sure Vessie is in Gods Garden of Souls. For now there will be no more laughter or good times, or kidding about the big fish she caught, death is a beginning not an ending.
