Dear All,

As you know Vishnu Vardhani Patro passed away on Wednesday, August 3rd. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, Akka and Nani.

Vishnu’s Life at a Glance

Vishnu Vardhani was born in Berhampur, Orissa on October 10th, 1955 and was the daughter of Meenakshi Amma and K. Satyanarayan Murty. She was the 7th child of 9 siblings and the youngest daughter in the family. Given the relative size of the family, her familial values were always defined and strong.

Vishnu “Akka”, as she was lovingly referred to by her relatives, was engaged to Hari at the age of 16, married at 18 and thereafter, moved across the world to start her dream life in America. They spent 48 years together. During this time, they traveled the world, maintained an active social calendar, contributed to the growth of the Dallas Indian community, and truly maximized life to the fullest.

Vishnu was dedicated to her young family and teaching Raj and Reena the importance of spirituality and modesty. Her family was complete with the addition of her grandchildren.

Vishnu was very spiritual and was committed to her Hindu Faith. She was a pillar at the local temple and enjoyed devotional hymns and bhajans. Her impact on the local communities is unprecedented. Vishnu “Nani” was always willing to help new community members integrate comfortably.

She was always smiling and full of happiness.

Vishnu was very close to her family in India and actively encouraged and supported them to seek opportunities in America. In her free time, she loved to travel, read articles, do anything Bollywood (soap operas, concerts, etc.), positively contribute to the Oriya community, be active with temple activities, help others and spend time with her grandchildren.

“Namaa”, as her grandchildren called her, was very active in their lives. She would coordinate extracurricular activities for them and ensure that they get there and back on time. She was committed to their success, well-being, and upbringing; she helped to instill the very values that Raj and Reena grew up with and embody today.

Vishnu’s zest for life led her to fully embrace American culture with an Indian twist, of course. She loved 80s music and was always listening to her best hits of the 80s CD that she would buy from the TV. In addition, she had some quirky food traditions and often times you could find her eating a Fish Filet sandwich from McDonalds, Mexican Pizza from Taco Bell and Schlotzsky’s sandwiches. She would even create traditions of her own: Lay’s potato chips with yogurt, rice and sambar. She shared this zest and joy with her kids, grandkids and ultimately, the Oriya community. Alas, sometimes, it’s the simple things in life that bring the greatest joys.

Vishnu Vardhani is survived by her husband Hari Arjun, son Raj Kumar, daughter-in-law Refern, daughter Reena Lakshmi, son-in-law Hikesh and grandchildren Shailey Diya and Shalin Jai.

She will always be remembered and will live on in our memories.
