Virginia’s mother died in childbirth and she was adopted and raised by Dora Alice (Smith) and Robert E. Williamson. When Virginia was fourteen years old, her mother, Dora, passed away and she moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska where she was raised by her great uncle and aunt, Walter and Velma Smith.  Virginia completed her formal education graduating from the Red Cloud High School with the class of 1945. She attended nursing college for a semester in Lincoln but returned home to help care for her aunt, Velma Smith, who was in failing health. During that time she also was employed with the Red Cloud Advertiser newspaper.

Virginia was united in marriage with Erwin Christian Knehans on September 3, 1949 at Red Cloud, Nebraska. This union was blessed with three children. They lived in the Red Cloud community until 1956, when they moved to their farm in the Riverton area. Virginia remained at Riverton following Erwin’s death on July 4, 1984 until moving to the Golden Village at Franklin in 2003. Due to her failing health in later years she became a resident of the Grandview Manor at Campbell and then moved to Franklin’s Care and Rehabilitation Center.

In her leisure time Virginia pursued a number of interests and activities. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, playing cards and working puzzles. She had made numerous quilts and blankets for family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Erwin; her parents; Dora and Robert Williamson; and great uncle, Walter Smith and wives, Velma and Ruth.
