Virginia “Aunt Jean” Sorrell, 87, of Tallahassee, passed into the loving arms of Jesus on January 18, 2017, while surrounded by her daughter and son-in-law.

The eldest of eight children, she was born January 21, 1929, in Ray City, Georgia, to the late Fred L. and Edna Mathis Cowart. Also preceding her death are her husband of 41 years, Grady Lee Sorrell; sister, Eloise Webb; and brothers, Fred L. Cowart, Jr., William H. Cowart, and J. Terrell Cowart. After moving to Tallahassee in 1960, she worked for Central Telephone until 1962, then went to work for the State of Florida and Leon County School Board. She was a dedicated member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Glenda S. Myers (Monty); grandchildren, Sean Shanks, Megan L. Myers; step-granddaughters, Hollie M. Elihow and Lisa M. Canup (Ed); great-grandchildren, Dylan, Sydney, and Eli Shanks; step-great-grandchildren, Jason Dodson, Ashley Dodson, Sarah Elihow; siblings, Mary C. Conger (Wendell), Betty C. Harrell (Jim), J. David Cowart (Linda); sisters-in-law, Dianne Cowart, Debra Cowart, Dawne Cowart, Dorothy Jordan, Louise Lawson, Christine Denmark (Walter), and Barbara Sorrell; as well as many nieces and nephews.
