Mrs. Edith Virginia Cannon Fields, 99, of Newnan, GA. went home to the lord May 19, 2017. Mrs. Virginia, or Granny as she was affectionately known, was born August 3rd, 1917 in Newnan, GA. to Bert Lee Cannon and Ophelia Dewberry Cannon.

Growing up I loved to ask Granny about when she was a little girl. It was fascinating trying to imagine what it must have been like to see the first Model T Ford to roll into town, or to think about how people entertained themselves before T.V. and Cellphones. However, then Granny would remind me that growing up as the second oldest girl out of nine siblings there wasn’t a lot of play time because she had to help watch her younger siblings and work in the family garden. Granny would tell stories of how her family survived the Great Depression through her father trading their vegetables for items the family needed. The best part of her story was when she said “They never really realized they were in the depression because their family never went without.”

Granny had many careers throughout her lifetime. When she was young she worked at the old cotton mill on East Washington St. She then worked for Kessler as a sales clerk, at Lee Kings drug store working the soda fountain, and at Playtex as a seamstress. She also worked at color craft printers with two of her sons and her sister as a quality inspector. The last career she had before retirement was working as a nurse’s aide at Coweta General Hospital. Her favorite job of all though was being a homemaker, and many remember her delicious cakes and fabulous home cooked meals. Her door was always open to family and friends alike. We will always love and admire the strong and independent woman she was, who set a great example of love and family.

Granny was surrounded by love and prayers as she passed as is survived by her daughter Emily Fields, sons Cary (Janice) Fields and Joel (Kitty) Fields; daughter-in-law Pat Fields; grandchildren David (Sheila) Fields, Cory (Erica) Fields, Brandon (Laura) Fields, and Amanda (D.J.) Kennedy; great-grandchildren Katie Daly, Kayla Fields, Sydney Fields, Jacob Fields, Dylan Fields and Aidan Kennedy; and great-great-grandchildren Chloe Daly, Aria Fields and Carter Fields. She is also survived by sisters Reba Strickland, Charlsie Hardegree, and Melba Kitchens; brothers Garfield (Nell) Cannon, and BL Cannon. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by sons James Fields, Paul Fields and David Fields; sister Edna Morrow and brothers Earl Cannon, Glenn Cannon and Wendell Canon.
